Monetary unit of Republic of Bulgaria is the lev who is equal to 100 stotinkas. In a money turnover there are coins in nominal value 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 stotinkas, 1 lev.

In 1962, brass coins 1 have been entered into Bulgaria, 2 and 5 stotinkas and coins from nickel-brass of an alloy 10, 20, 50 stotinkas and 1 lev. In 1992 a new series of coins of denomination in 10, 20 and 50 stotinkas, 1, 2 has been manufactured, 5 and 10 levs. All of them have been executed from alloy nickel-brass, except for Copper-Nickel 10 levs. In 1997 have been entered nickel-brass of a coin 10, 20 and 50 levs.

In 1999 there was an issue of coins of a new series of denomination in 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 stotinkas. In 2002 the coin 1 lev has replaced the note with the same name entered in 1999. Coins 1, 2 and 5 stotinkas are executed from a brass, a coin 10, 20 and 50 stotinkas from a Copper-Nickel, on an obverse of each coin the plotting of horseman Madara. The bimetallic coin 1 lev bears Sacred Ivan Rilskogo's plotting on face side.
