Monetary unit of the Korean People's democratic Republic is wons which consists from 100 chon. In circulation there are coins in nominal value 1/2, 1, 2, 5, 10, 50 chon and 1 wons.

Coins of the first issues of the North Korea were dignity 1, 5, 10 both 50 chon and 1 wons. Later in the circulation there were coins 10, 50 and 100. During cold war, there was a special system of marks of coins for different social groups. Coins with one star were for "socialist visitors", and coins with two stars were for "capitalist visitors". Besides in Northern Korea the set of the various memorable coins which have been rapped out with the name of Democratic People's Republic of Korea was manufactured. The majority if not all from them are sold foreign numismatists.

Since 2001 the government of the North Korea has refused the well-known relation 2,16 to 1 US dollar (which as speak, it has been based on Kim Jong II's birthday - on February, 16th) and comes nearer to the real rates close to a kerbs rate.
