Monetary unit of Qatar is the rial which is equal to 100 dirhams. In circulation there are coins in nominal value 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 dirhams.

Till 1966 in Qatar as the currency, was used Indian rupee. After rupee devaluation in 1966, Qatar, along with other states using rupee in Persian gulf, has decided to present own currency. Some time in Qatar the Saudi rial was used, and then there was a rial of Qatar and the city of Dubai which became result of the conclusion between Qatar and Dubai of the Agreement from March, 21st, 1966. The Saudi rial cost 1,065 rupees while the rial of Qatar and Dubai equaled Indian rupee before its devaluation.

Till 1973, Qatar and Dubai in common manufactured rial. But after the introduction of Dubai into the United Arab Emirates, in Qatar have started to manufacture rial separately from Dubai.

In 1966 coins in nominal value 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 dirham, on behalf of Qatar and Dubai have been manufactured. In 1973 a new series of coins has been presented in the same sizes and compositions, but only on behalf of Qatar.
