Nominal monetary unit of Azerbaijan is the manat which consists of 100 qepiks. In circulation there are coins of denomination of 1, 3, 5, 10, 20 and 50 qepiks.

After disintegration of Soviet Union, in Azerbaijan, the new monetary unit - a manat on August, 15th, 1992 has been entered.

From the beginning of 2002 on the beginning of 2005 the exchange rate was stable enough (it was changed within 4770-4990 manats for US dollar). Since spring of 2005 constant addition of value of a manat against the dollar the USA has been noted small, but; the reason, most likely, was the increase in inflow of petrodollars in the country, and also as a whole heavy prices for petroleum in the world market. In the end of 2005 one dollar cost 4591 manat. Notes more low 100 manat have actually disappeared by 2005, as well as coins - qepiks. Coins were manufactured by nominal value 5, 10, 20 and 50 qepiks in 1992 and 1993. The part of coins in 1992 was manufactured from copper and the Copper-Nickels, then all coins produced of aluminium.

On January, 1st, 2006 the new manat which interchanged on a parity 1:5000 old manats has been entered into the circulation. Since the October, 1st, 2005, all prices, for simplification of transferring have been indicated both in new, and in old manats. Old manats held good till December, 31st, 2006. The coin in 50 qepiks from new issue is rather similar to a coin in 2 (euros).
