Monetary unit of Federal Republic of Nigeria is the naira which is equal 100 kobo. In the cash circulation there are coins of denomination 50 kobo and 1, 2 nairas.

In 1973 in Nigeria coins in nominal value 1/2, 1, 5, 10 and 25 kobo have been manufactured. Coins 1/2 and 1 kobo have been rapped out in bronze, and coins of the maximum nominal values from a Copper-Nickel. Coins 1/2 kobo were manufactured only this year. In 1991 small coins 1, 10 and 25 kobo were manufactured from a copper-plated steel, along with the nickeled coins 50 kobo and 1 naira. On February, 28th, 2007 a new series of coins in nominal value 50 kobo, 1 and 2 nairas, and 1 and 2 nairas bimetallic has been manufactured. The deadline for an exchange of old currency has been positioned for May, 31st, 2007. The central bank of Nigeria declared that coins with 1/2 to 25 kobo are withdrawn from circulation, since February, 28th, 2007.

Obverses of Nigerian coins of all nominal values are decorated by the State Emblem of this African country and an inscription FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA. On a reverse of a coin of denomination 10 kobo two oil palm trees, a turn-over of a coin in nominal value 25 kobo are represented contains the plotting of peanuts which are laid in a pyramid, a reverse of a coin of denomination 50 kobo is decorated by the plotting of corncobs.
