Republic Mauritius Monetary unit is the rupee which is equal to 100 cents. In a cash turn-over there are coins in nominal value 1, 5, 20 cents and 1/2, 1, 5, 10, 20 rupees.

In 1877 on Mauritius coins 1, 2, 5 cents from copper and 10 and 20 cents from silver have been manufactured. However, their production have terminated in 1899 and did not renew till 1911, and silver coins were not manufactured till 1934, yet have not entered into the circulation of a coin 1/4, 1/2 and 1 rupee. In 1947 Copper-Nickel coins of 10 cents have been manufactured, and by degrees since 1950 all silver coins of the maximum nominal values have been transferred on a Copper-Nickel.

In 1987 a new series is entered into the circulation on which was the portrait not the monarch (Mauritius became republic only in 1992), and sir Sivusagura Ramgulama is represented. This series consists of coins of 1 and 5 cents of a copper-plated steel (5 cents have been essentially reduced in sizes), coins of 20 cents and 1/2 rupees from a Nickel-plated steel, and Copper-Nickel coins of 1 and 5 rupees. The Copper-Nickel coin of 10 rupees has been manufactured in 1997.

In 2007 the bimetallic coin of 20 rupees in honour of the 40 anniversary of Bank of Mauritius has been manufactured.
