Modern monetary unit of Botswana is a pula. In monetary circulation there are coins in nominal value 5, 10, 25, 50 thebe and 1, 2, 5 pula.

The Pula has been entered in 1976, having replaced the South African rand face value. Despite 12 % of devaluation in May, 2005 of a pula remains to one of the strongest currencies in Africa.

In 1976 coins in nominal value 1, 5, 10, 25 both 50 thebe and 1 pula have been manufactured. The coin 1 thebe was minted from aluminium, 5 thebe from bronze, other coins from a Copper-Nickel. All coins were round, except for a gear coin of 1 pula. Bronze, the dihexagonal form the coin 2 thebe has been entered in 1981, but for a short while till 1985. In 1991 5 thebe began to manufacture a coin from a steel the covered bronze, with a Nickel-plated steel have replaced Copper-Nickel coins 10, 25 and 50 thebe, and at a coin of 1 pula the size was changed in the smaller party, it began to do from nickel-brass of an alloy, the 7-coal form. The same form the coin 2 pulas from alloy nickel-brass has been entered in 1994. In 1998 after a conclusion from circulation of coins 1 and 2 thebe, coins 5 and 25 thebe began to do also the heptagonal form, and a coin 10 and 50 thebe have kept the round. Round bimetallic coins 5 pulas have been manufactured in 2000, they consist of the Copper-Nickel center in a copper ring.
